Councillors in the Westport-Belmullet Municipal District on Monday claimed that the recent announcement of funding for extensions to the Great Western Greenway from Achill Sound to Bunnacurry, as well as from Westport to Murrisk - was funding that was announced already in different guises.

After the drawn out process of the previous day - where most of the time was spent sorting ballots before the counting began things moved much smooter on Sunday, with the Westport count being completed in the early evening and the Ballina count not long after 10pm and just the Claremorris count which going by the tally figures looked a forgone conclusion wating to be finished in the early hours of the morning. 

After being part of an electoral area that was almost as big as some counties for the past half-a-decade, Westport has returned to a more traditional electoral area shape after the jettisoning of the Belmullet area, to go it alone for the elections.

Westport based Fine Gael election candidate, Peter Flynn, has said he will insist that the Greenway extensions to Louisburgh and Ballycroy are to the fore when it comes to setting out Mayo County Council's strategy for the next five years.
